Spirit Lake is the Lakes Conference softball champions. The Indians swept a double header from Western Christian last night to lock up the title. In the first game, Spirit Lake led throughout, before allowing 3 runs in the top of the 7th to the Wolfpack. With the game tied at 3-3, the Indians picked up the game winner in the bottom of the 7th. Kesley Delperdang would score twice in the game. Caitlyn Roberts was 2-3, including the game winning hit.
Between last night’s contests, Spirit Lake held a ceremony, honoring the 2004 State Championship team from Spirit Lake. Many of the players from that team were in attendance. Fans heard from former coach Chuck Skogerboe, who spoke about each players role in that championship run. A montage was then played, giving those in attendance a chance to hear once again from late KUOO sports director Joey Elbert, along with long time color commentator Clyde Ihrke, with their highlights from the 3 games at state.
The nightcap between the Indians and Wolfpack saw sophomore Bailee Newman hit her 7th homerun, and second grand slam of the season as Spirit Lake won 8-6. Caitlyn Roberts had another strong game, going 2-4 at the plate. The Indians would pick up those 8 runs on just 4 hits. Bailee Newman got the win pitching in the first game, Sami Ashland in the second. The wins give Spirit Lake an overall record of 19-8, and 12-1 in conference play. One more regular season game will be played on Monday, with Spirit Lake hosting Emmetsburg. You can hear the game on Y 100.
