Spirit Lake Remains Undefeated After Road Win in Sheldon
Spirit Lake hit the road Friday night to take on Sheldon in a 2A District 1 match-up, and the Indians proved to be too much to handle, winning by a final of 41-0. It was their third shutout in the last 4 weeks.
The first quarter was dominated by the officials, with an unofficial tally of 13 penalties. Neither team found much of a rhythm between flags in the first, but Spirit Lake did manage to score on a 1 yard touchdown carry by Josh Hofstra.
It appeared that Sheldon tied it up after a 45 yard carry by Joe Weppler in the second quarter, but it was called back by an offensive penalty. They were unable to find the end zone again. The game saw 18 penalties in the first half for more than 160 yards. Spirit Lake took a 14-0 lead with about a minute remaining in the 2nd quarter after an Alec Henrickson quarterback keeper from 10 yards out. Sheldon fumbled on their next drive and the Indians pounced. Henrickson connected with Mike Meschede on a 24 yard touchdown pass to give Spirit Lake a 21-0 lead at the half.
Trevor Jensen added two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter and Tyler Jenness ran for a 42 yard touchdown in the fourth to give Spirit Lake the 41-0 win. Spirit Lake's defense forced four fumbles and kept Sheldon under 50 yards.
Spirit Lake advanced to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in the district. The Indians travel to Spencer this Friday for a non-district game. That game can be heard on KUOO.
