It was a non-district match-up, but the Spirit Lake Indians continued their undefeated season with a 48-35 win over Spencer. Spirit Lake led 48-7 before pulling starters out for the 4th quarter.
Spirit Lake jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with two Trevor Jensen touchdowns – a 1 yard rush and 15 yard reception. Spencer added a score at the end of the first, a 3 yard touchdown by Josh Greer.
In the second quarter, the Indians added 3 more scores – a 2 yard Jensen rush, 53 yard Austin Folsom reception, and a 9 yard carry for Tyler Jenness. Spirit Lake led 35-7 at the half.
Tyler Jenness added two more rushing touchdowns in the third quarter. Spencer blocked an extra point, giving the Indians a 48-7 lead after three. Through 3 quarters, the Indians offense gained close to 500 yards.
Both teams sent the second stringers in for the final quarter. Spirit Lake lost about 20 yards overall in the fourth while Spencer added four touchdowns. John Greer had a 19 yard touchdown carry, Dylan Holst added a 14 yard score, and Sean Slattery punched it in from 3 yards out. The Tigers also blocked an Indian punt and Christian Krejci recovered the ball for a Spencer touchdown.
When all was said and done, the Indians held on for a 48-35 win on the road.
Next week is the final week of the regular season. Spencer still has a chance at making the playoffs and they’ll play at Sgt. Bluff-Luton. Spirit Lake looks to finish the regular season undefeated as they host MOC-Floyd Valley.
