Spirit Lake Girls Beat Humboldt; 1 Win Away From State

The Spirit Lake girls basketball team is heading back to a regional final after coming from behind and beating Humboldt Wednesday night 56 – 49.  Spirit Lake led 16 – 14 after 1, but Humboldt would outscore Spirit Lake 20 – 14 in the 2nd to take the lead by 4 at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter Humboldt pushed their lead to 6 and at one time had an 8 point lead.  It was the 4th quarter defense by the Indians that ultimately put the game away outscoring the Wildcats 16 – 3 in the final frame.

Humboldt was led by Lauren Friesth with a game high 27 points.  They finish their season at 13 – 10.  Spirit Lake had 3 players in double figures and were led by Emma Dau with 24 points, Joie Veldman with 14 and Bailey Loveall with 10.  Spirit Lake improves to 18 – 5 and will play Unity Chrisitian in a Class 3A Region 1 Final in Sheldon Saturday at 7 PM.  Unity beat Sheldon 76 – 40 to advance in the other semifinal.  The game can be heard on KUOO.

In Class 4A Region 1 girls basketball, Spencer beat LeMars 44 – 40 and will play at Sioux City Heelan Saturday and Fort Dodge beat Storm Lake 61 – 35 and will play at Algona Saturday.
