Spirit Lake Football Advances To The Dome!
Spirit Lake will return to the UNI-Dome after defeating Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 35-13 in the Class 2A Quarterfinals on Friday night. The Indians had the ball first but fumbled in Lions’ territory. Mitch Van Beek came up with the fumble recovery and CL/G-LR scored nine plays later on a 15 yard touchdown run by C.J. Roths. The score was 6-0 Lions after a missed extra point. Spirit Lake responded on their second drive, going 13 plays and scoring on a six yard touchdown run by Tyler Jenness. After the extra point, Spirit Lake led 7-6 with 3:44 to go in the first quarter. CL/G-LR then retook the lead on a nine play scoring drive. This time Pete Menage ran it in from five yards out and the Lions led 13-7 with :36.4 to go in the first. Both teams punted on each of their next drives. Spirit Lake got into Lions territory on their next drive, but Van Beek intercepted a pass and returned it to the Indians’ 48 yard line. After a penalty and a loss on a passing play, the Lions turned the ball over. This time Jeremiah Eldridge intercepted it and returned it to the CL/G-LR 25 yard line. Spirit Lake would score seven plays later as Jenness ran it in from one yard out and Spirit Lake retook the lead at 14-13. After another Lions punt, the Indians built their lead to eight after a 30 yard touchdown catch by Billy Brown. Spirit Lake lead 21-13 at halftime.
CL/G-LR went three and out on their first possession of the second half and Spirit Lake’s offense took advantage. The Indians put together a 13 play, 70 yard drive that lasted nearly four minutes and Dallas Poock scored a one yard touchdown to extend the lead to 28-13 after the extra point. The Lions, trying to stay in the game, drove all the way down to the Spirit Lake nine yard line, but turned the ball over on downs near the end of the third quarter. The Indians got their final score following a failed fake punt on fourth down for the Lions. Logan Backhaus ran it in from 38 yards out on the first play of the drive to up the lead to 35-13. After another CL/G-LR punt, the Indians burned off the clock to seal the victory.
Backhaus led all Spirit Lake rushers with 13 carries for 92 yards. The Indians had 159 yards on the ground compared to 84 for the Lions. The Indians are 12-0 and advance to the state football playoffs at the UNI-Dome on Saturday. They will play at 4:05pm against North Fayette Valley. Menage was 10-for-15 passing for the CL/G-LR. Their season comes to a close at 7-5.
