Tue 1-7-2020

Girls Game

#8 (3A) Okoboji remained undefeated with a hard fought 45-37 win at West Lyon on Tuesday night. The Wildcats would jump out to an 8-2 lead but the Pioneers closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 8-8 entering the second frame. The game remained tied at 12-12 before Okoboji ended the quarter on another nice run to take a 20-15 lead into halftime. The Pioneers would grow that lead to 29-21 on a three-pointer by Kallyn Stumbo but Brooklyn Meyer answered with a three of her own, and the Wildcats would trim the deficit to 31-28 entering the final quarter. The fourth quarter was another evenly matched frame for the first part with West Lyon taking a 37-36 lead on a Meyer basket with 2:00 remaining, but Magan Christopherson put the Pioneers back on top with a three-pointer, and Okoboji would salt the game away at the free throw line behind Stumbo, Christopherson and Carissa Doran. Christopherson led Okoboji with 16 points to go along with 6 rebounds; Kallyn Stumbo had 13 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 8 assists and Camry Jones added 8 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Comments From Head Coach John Adams

That was another big road win for us where we really had to lock in and guard. I thought both teams played excellent defense, and it was hard for either team to get an offensive flow going. We couldn’t get much separation, and you have to give West Lyon credit for how well they guarded us. It was great to see us not panic when they took the late lead, and Carissa gave Magan a terrific pass for her big 3-pointer. We hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and Kallyn made a great move to give us a four point lead. Our posts did a great job of trying to limit Meyer’s touches, and that’s hard to do as she’s a tremendous player. Camry, Montana Wilson and Morgan Robinson really battled all game long, and our guards did a good job of helping out as well.

Comments From Head Coach Ryan Stumbo

The game tonight was really competitive and came down to the difference of a few plays.  It was a tough battle from both teams, and we really respect the fight both teams gave tonight.  This will be a good test of character for us.  It is easy when things go the way you wan them to and a lot harder when they don't.  One thing we work to take pride in is continuing to pound the rock through those hard times.  We are looking forward to another chance to compete later this week.
