Girls Game

#12 Okoboji earned a hard-fought 51-44 road win over Sioux Center on Friday night.  The first quarter was back and forth with neither team able to gain more than a 3 point advantage as the host Warriors would take a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.  Okoboji would go on a 7-1 run behind a 3 pointer from Kallyn Stumbo and driving lay-up from Magan Christopherson to take an 18-14 lead; from there the teams would play even and the Pioneers took a 24-20 lead into the halftime break.  Sioux Center went on an 8-0 run to start the quarter to go ahead 28-24 but Okoboji would battle back to tie it at 37 all entering the fourth quarter.  The final frame was a defensive battle as Sioux Center would nudge ahead 44-43 with 3:00 remaining but the Pioneers would score the final eight points of the game, with Morgan Jensen hitting three big free throws, to take the victory.  Magan Christopherson led Okoboji with 19 points; Kallyn Stumbo added 8 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds while Camry Jones added 8 points and 9 rebounds.  Alyssa Mulder led the Warriors with 16 points while Jacie Vander Wall chipped in with 12 and Hope Arends added 11.  Okoboji improves to 12-2 on the year and 9-2 in the Siouxland Conference.  The Pioneers will host Sheldon on Tuesday night.

Comments From Okoboji Coach John Adams:

We guarded very well for three quarters and did a great job in the fourth quarter of getting stops.  Morgan Jensen had a huge steal and some big free throws down the stretch and Alli Harms also battled extremely hard on the defensive end during the possession when we were up one and Morgan got the steal. We got some great productivity from our bench tonight as they scored 11 points and got some big time rebounds. We’re happy to get the win as Sioux Center has been playing extremely well in some close losses lately, and we can’t wait to get back on the court with this group on Monday.

Boys Game

The Pioneers traveled to Sioux Center Friday night to take on the Warriors and open up their second round of conference play. Both teams came out firing right out of the gates with the first quarter ending with a score of 27-18 in favor of Sioux Center. The Pioneers fought back to close the gap in the 2nd quarter with the score ending 40-37 in favor of the Warriors going into the half. Sioux Center extended their lead in the 3rd quarter opening up the game 62-42. The Pioneers continued to battle going into the 4th quarter pulling within eight points late; however, the push was not enough as the final score ended 76-65 in favor of Sioux Center. Lucas Lorenzen led the Pioneers with a double-double effort scoring 16 points and grabbing 19 rebounds on the night. Kyle Martin also scored 16 points, including four three pointers on the night. Jamison Helmers contributed 14 points and Cris Halbur an additional 12 to the Pioneer effort. Sioux Center was led by Cade Bleeker and Kayden Glade who both scored 22 points.  Okoboji falls to 4-9 on the year.

Comments From Okoboji Coach Ryan Stumbo:

Despite the end result, we feel like the guys have played with some good intensity the past couple games. We just need to keep working hard on defense to limit big quarters and continue to compete hard on that end of the ball. Some credit just needs to be given to Sioux Center as their players made some nice athletic plays and moves. They made us work to keep them in front and protect the rim. We are really proud of our guys for the improvements we have shown compared to when we first played them the very first game of the year. We saw some nice balanced scoring tonight, which was great and had some really gritty stretches of defense that we will need to build off of going into our next game against Sheldon.
