Iowa Lakes Hires New Softball Coach
Troy Larson, Director of Athletics at Iowa Lakes, has announced the hiring of Corey Christopher to serve as the head softball coach for the Lakers in 2015.
Christopher has had a lifelong involvement with softball as a coach, umpire, and player. He has coached high school softball at the varsity level for three different programs over a span of nearly 10 years. Most recently, Christopher has been serving as an assistant coach for the Iowa Lakes Men’s Basketball team.
While coaching at Iowa Lakes, the Lakers posted a first regular season Iowa Community College Athletic Conference championship in college history and went on to win the NJCAA Region XI championship earning a trip to the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament.
The Laker Softball program has a notable history and tradition that Christopher believes he can rebuild.
“I am happy to have the opportunity to bring this program back to relevance in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference,” Christopher said. “I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. My goal is to build a program where our athletes find excellence on the field as well as in the classroom.”
Iowa Lakes Softball has most recently been at the top of the ICCAC in 2010 when they finished third in the NJCAA National Tournament while compiling a 61-11 record. The Lakers averaged more than 50 wins per season from 2004-2010. Since 2006, Iowa Lakes Softball has had 19 All-Americans.
“We are excited to add Corey to our staff as the head softball coach,” commented Troy Larson. “He brings a wealth of knowledge of the sport of softball. He is also an outstanding recruiter. He cares about student athletes and getting the right ones on campus. I’m anxious to see the improvement in our softball program.”
Christopher obtained a master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Psychology from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He received his undergraduate degree from Southwest Minnesota State University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Language Arts Education and Coaching.
Christopher will also be serving in the role of Sports Information Marketing for Iowa Lakes.
