Troy
Larson, Director of Athletics at Iowa Lakes, has announced the hiring of Corey
Christopher to serve as the head softball coach for the Lakers in 2015.
Christopher
has had a lifelong involvement with softball as a coach, umpire, and player. He
has coached high school softball at the varsity level for three different
programs over a span of nearly 10 years. Most recently, Christopher has been
serving as an assistant coach for the Iowa Lakes Men’s Basketball
team.
While
coaching at Iowa Lakes, the Lakers posted a first
regular season Iowa Community College Athletic Conference championship in
college history and went on to win the NJCAA Region XI championship earning a
trip to the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Tournament.
The
Laker Softball program has a notable history and tradition that Christopher
believes he can rebuild.
“I
am happy to have the opportunity to bring this program back to relevance in the
Iowa Community College Athletic Conference,” Christopher said. “I look forward
to the challenges that lie ahead. My goal is to build a program where our
athletes find excellence on the field as well as in the
classroom.”
Iowa
Lakes Softball has most recently been at the top of the ICCAC in 2010 when they
finished third in the NJCAA National Tournament while compiling a 61-11 record.
The Lakers averaged more than 50 wins per season from 2004-2010. Since 2006,
Iowa Lakes Softball has had 19 All-Americans.
“We
are excited to add Corey to our staff as the head softball coach,” commented
Troy Larson. “He brings a wealth of knowledge of the sport of softball. He is
also an outstanding recruiter. He cares about student athletes and getting the
right ones on campus. I’m anxious to see the improvement in our softball
program.”
Christopher
obtained a master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Psychology from Minnesota State
University, Mankato. He received his undergraduate degree from Southwest
Minnesota State University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Language Arts
Education and Coaching.
Christopher
will also be serving in the role of Sports Information Marketing for Iowa
Lakes.
