HMS keeps playoff hopes alive with win
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn did what they needed to in order to have a chance at Class 1A playoffs on Friday night in Armstrong, beating North Union 35-12. HMS led 7-0 after one, 14-6 at halftime and 28-12 after three.
The Hawks offense was once again efficient on the ground, producing 407 total yards. Hunter Kuehl led the attack with 15 carries for 231 yards. The senior had touchdown runs of 48, 75, and 27 yards. Jordan Japenga had 101 yards on 16 carries including a 21 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Japenga also had an interception on defense. Connor Kuchel and Logan Rozeboom each recovered a fumble for the Hawks who improve to 4-4 (3-3) and face Sheldon next Friday in non-district play in Hartley. They will advance to the Class 1A Playoffs if Emmetsburg beats LeMars Gehlen next Friday.
North Union is 1-7 (0-5). The Warriors had 117 yards through the air including a 35 yard touchdown catch by Braden Ortman and a 27 yard touchdown catch by Jacob Braddock. Cody Runksmeier had 97 yards on the ground for North Union, who will try for their first district win next Friday at Okoboji.
