Sat 9-21-2013

Extra points were the difference in Hartley on Friday night as Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn held on for a 14-12 win over LeMars Gehlen Catholic in Class 1A, District 1 football. The Hawks struck first with a 10 yard touchdown run by Trenton Schirmer with 1:25 to go in the first. Extra point was good by Marcus Rodriguez to make it 7-0. With 13.6 seconds to go in the first, the Jays got on the board with an 11 yard touchdown catch by Aaron Jentz, but they missed the extra point. With 2 seconds to go before halftime, HMS got up 14-6 thanks to a 5 yard touchdown pass from Evan Metzler to Jordan Japenga. In the third quarter, the Jays scored again, this time a 6 yard run by Blake Wiltgen. The failed two point conversion would prove to be the difference maker in the game. Both defenses would bend but not break the rest of the way. With 2:37 to go in the game, the Jays were driving in the red zone but fumbled on the HMS 7 yard line to Dakota Drenth and the Hawks ran out the clock to preserve the win.

The Hawks had 263 yards on the ground in the contest with 71 of them going to Logan Rozeboom.  Hunter Kuehl had an interception and Jackson Swanson had a fumble recovery for the HMS defense. Penalties were an issue at times for their offense as they had 5 false starts in the contest.

The Hawks improves to 3-1 (2-0 district) and travels to Western Christian next week. Gehlen falls to 1-3 (1-1 district) and hosts North Union next week.
