Emmetsburg got out early on Estherville 9 – 2 after the 1st quarter and held on for a low scoring 33 – 28 win on Tuesday night. Emmetsburg led by 8 at halftime but in the second half would be outscored 18 – 15 by Estherville in a very low scoring, poor shooting contest. Emmetsburg would have 2 players in double figures led by Ashton Connelly and Alexa Naig each with 11 points. Estherville was led by Caitlyn Clayton and a game high 15 points. Emmetsburg has won 3 in a row and finished the lakes conference at 9 – 5 which was good for 4th place.
Emmetsburg is now 12 – 8 and will host Manson NW Webster on Thursday. Estherville finishes the regular season at 1 – 19 and will be at Spirit Lake Saturday night in a Class 3A quarterfinal playoff game on KUOO.
Boys
In the nightcap, Estherville jumped out to an early 7 – 0 lead before Emmetsburg would respond and end the quarter on a 9 – 4 run to be down by just 4. The E’hawks would then score 20 points in the 2nd to lead 29 – 21 at half. In the 3rd quarter, Estherville responded by outscoring Emmetsburg 24 – 14 to lead by 2. In the fourth quarter, Emmetsburg put the game away and Estherville missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer as the E’hawks won 59 – 57. Emmetsburg had 2 players in doubles and they were led by Erik Drost with 19 and Austin Krause with 12 points. Estherville had 3 players in doubles. They were led by Joe Heinrichs with 15 points, Justin Heinrichs with 13 and David Hughes with 11. Carsten Bosch had 8 points and missed a 3 pointer off the left rim as time expired and would have given ELC the victory by 1 point had it gone in.
Emmetsburg is now 7 – 13 and will host Manson Thursday. Estherville finishes the regular season at 10 – 11 and will host Sibley Ocheyedan Monday night in a Class 2A boy’s postseason basketball game.
