Eburg Baseball Wins Marathon; Okoboji Comes Up Short

Class 2A District 2

Game 1

The first game of the night between Emmetsburg and Hartley Melvin Sanborn took 3 hours 15 minutes, lasted 12 innings and in the end Emmetsburg would come from behind twice to defeat HMS 9-8.  HMS scores the game's first 2 runs in the 1st inning.  Emmetsburg responded scoring 2 runs in the 2nd to tie it up.  The E'hawks would score 2 more in the 5th inning to led 4-2 going into the 7th inning.  The Hawks of HMS would score 3 runs on 5 hits in that inning as they were down to their last 2 outs.  Then in the bottom of the 7th, Emmetsburg would be down to their last strike before West Schultes connected on a single, moved up to 2nd base on an error and then Jacob Kibbie knocked him in to tie it up and go to extra innings.  Neither team would score until the 12th inning when HMS put up 3 runs on 2 hits and led 8-5 heading into the bottom of the 12th.  In that inning, Emmetsburg started off getting the first 5 batters on and would tie the game at 8.  Aaron Bird came up for the E'hawks with 2 outs in the inning and would get a base hit to knock in the winning run and Emmetsburg would win 9-8 in 12 innings.

Both pitchers were outstanding and neither one would get a decision.  Dillon Van Oosbree for Emmetsburg pitched 9 innings giving up 5 runs on 14 hits while striking out 9.  Ryan Flynn for HMS pitched 9 innings giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits while striking out 8.  The winning pitcher was Greg Wesley going 3 innings giving up 3 runs (0 earned) on 2 hits and the losing pitcher was Jordan Japenga going 2+ innings giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits.

Hartley Melvin Sanborn scored 8 runs on 16 hits.  Casey Dorhout was 3-5 with 3 RBI's.  David Conway and Jordan Japenga were both 2-6 with an RBI.  Emmetsburg scored 9 runs on 11 hits.  They were led by Joe Jackson going 2-4 with 3 RBI's and Wes Schultes was 3-6 with 2 RBI's.

Emmetsburg improves to 17-11 and will take on Estherville Saturday in a Class 2A District 2 Final.  HMS finishes their season at 13-11 and will say goodbye to 4 seniors in Evan Metzler, Casey Dorhout, Nathan Westphal and Ryan Flynn

Game 2


Estherville-Lincoln Central put six runs on the board in the first two innings of a Class 2A Region 2 Semi-Final from Estherville on Tuesday night and held on for an 8-5 win over Okoboji.  The Midgets scored one in the first and then took advantage of four walks to score five in the second.  They added two in the fourth before Okoboji made it a game by scoring four of their own in fifth.  The Pioneers comeback attempt fell just short in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases off a couple of hits and a walk but managed to score just the one run.

Billy Snyder was the winning pitcher for E-LC.  He pitched the first five innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits.  He walked five and struck out seven.  Austin Egeland pitched in relief for the Midgets.  He gave up an earned run on two hits, striking out three, and walking one.  At the plate, Zach Humble was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.  Egeland was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.  The Midgets are 15-9 and now host Emmetsburg in a district final on Saturday at 7:00.  That game can be heard on Y 100.1.
 
Okoboji actually outhit the Midgets in the loss 8-6.  Matt Eckard was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.  At the plate Houston Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Holt Hunziker was the losing pitcher. He lasted just the first 1 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on three hits and four walks.  Eckard pitched the remainder of the game for the Pioneers.  He gave up two earned runs on three hits, a walk and struck out four.  Okoboji's season ends at 8-16.  The Pioneers say goodbye to two seniors: Ben DeMuth and Nick Cihlar.
