Class 2A Region 1 Girls Postseason Basketball From February 18
Pocahontas Area used a combination of speed and the long ball to beat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 78-64 in Girls Class 2A Regional basketball on Tuesday night. The Indians raced out to an 11-0 lead and led 20-11 after one. They extended the lead to 45-31 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Hawks went on a run and got the lead down to 9, but the Indians went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter and led 63-46 after three. The speed of the Indians definitely played a factor in the ball game as they forced the Hawks into 27 turnovers. PAC also hit 13 treys.
Ellie Ruffridge led all scorers for the Indians with 29. Hannah Stafford had 24, hitting five three pointers and going over the 1,000 point mark for her career. PAC improves to 20-3 and hosts Okoboji on Friday. The Pioneers advanced after beating North Union in Milford. H-M-S got 20 from Jaylin Rieck. The junior was 10-for-13 from the charity stripe. Senior Katie Mills hit five three pointers and had 18 points overall. The Hawks season ends at 14-9, their most wins since 1998. They graduate four seniors: Mills, Dixie Lauesen, Amber Buren, and Kendra Zeutenhorst.
Other Class 2A Region 1 scores had Okoboji over North Union 61 - 50, Western Christian defeated West Lyon 76 - 40 and South O'Brien beat Rock Valley 58 - 44.
