Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn let Alta-Aurelia hang around for a half, but the Hawks picked up the intensity in the second half en route to a 70-44 win over the Warriors in Girls Class 2A Regional Basketball on Saturday night. H-M-S led 14-7 after one, and 29-18 at halftime. In the third quarter, Alta-Auerlia made a run and cut the lead to 29-23, but H-M-S quickly extend the lead back to double digits and led 53-33 after three. The Hawks’ pressure defense helped force 30 Warrior turnovers in the contest compared to just 10 for H-M-S.
Freshman Kenna Rieck led all scorers with 23 for the Hawks. Jaylin Rieck had 14 while Amber Buren came off the bench for 10. Erica Thorn had three steals for H-M-S, who is 14-8 and travels to Pocahontas Area on Tuesday for a second round matchup with the Indians. Pocahontas Area is 19-3 and ranked 13th. The contest can be heard on Q102. Micah Barnes paced the Warriors with 20 points. The Warriors finish at 3-18.
