Comments From Spirit Lake Boys Coach Brad Travis:
While it may be hard for some of you up in the Northwest Tundra of Iowa to believe; the weather down here today was perfect! As in, low 70s, sunny and no wind!!! In addition to the great weather, we also had great performances in our events. Carter Toews started us off for the morning by qualifying 7th into the finals with a great time of 14.70. It was then time for Lauren Travis to qualify for the finals and with a throw a best of 40-0.75. This would make her the first Spirit Lake girl to medal in the Shot Put at the Drake Relays, in school history (Post 1993 for certain) by finishing 8th on the day. We then watched Carter Toews again on the track in the 100M open run a fantastic time of 10.95, just missing out on the finals by .10 of a second. His performance was 7th Best in 3A for the day and also put him 6th on the all-time performance list in school history. One hour later our Distance Medley of Jack Wajda, Jake Cornwall, Qam Hussey and Ryder Sundall hit the track running a time of 3:38.43 in one of the most highly contested HS Distance Meds in Drake history. Comparing their performance to other schools competing they finished 4th amongst all of the 3A schools in the event today. Soon after it was time for Carter Toews to finish our day in the 110H Finals. Going in 7th, Carter would finish 6th with a time of 14.65. This would rank him 3rd in 3A today and perhaps more impressive 5th all time in School History in one of Spirit Lakes most illustrious events! Tomorrow morning will highlight more of our relays with our boy’s shuttle starting us out at 8:15 and then onto our boys and girls 4x100s.
