Spencer soccer coach John Hansel is the 2023 recipient of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Soccer Golden Plaque of Distinction award. Hansel will be honored prior to the start of the Class 2A state championship match Saturday, June 3 on Field 6.
The IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction is awarded to the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession. 2023 marks the fifth-straight year that his Spencer has qualified for the Girls State Soccer Tournament.
Hansel’s Tigers have reached the state tournament six times. They were semi-finalists in 2018 and 2021. Hansel’s overall record is 147-34.
Hansel was Iowa’s Coach-of-the-Year recipient in 2015 and has served a four-year term on the IGHSAU’s Soccer Advisory Committee.
