On Saturday June 28th you can meet former Iowa Hawkeye, and now MN Timberwolf, Luka Garza. Luka will be at a barbecue from 4:30 to 6 at Okoboji High School. A live auction for two of Luka’s jerseys will be from 6:00 to 8:00 and a portion of the proceeds will go back to Okoboji Schools. Luka will then be hosting a basketball skills camp on June 29th at Okoboji High School. Luka’s dad Frank says they look forward to giving back to the communities of Iowa who have supported Luka throughout his career.
“Yeah this is very important to us and it’s Luka’s mission to hit cities that most people wouldn’t go to you know that they would ignore, there wasn’t enough people you couldn’t charge enough you couldn’t do this you couldn’t do that and that’s not really what this is about. This is a chance to give back to the community and share his experience, strength and hope through what he’s been doing.”
The camp will feature a morning session for 2nd through 5th graders. The afternoon session is for grades 6 through 12. Each session will be followed by an autograph and photo session with Luka. Frank says it was fun to watch Luka play with the Timberwolves this year but he is proud of Luka for things other than basketball.
“You know the kind of man he is and the kind of things that he does. That’s even what brings me more pride and joy because he walks the talk. And the things he learned in basketball: discipline, setting a goal, sticking to it you know doing the things that were tough to do. There’s no reporters out there at 10 o’clock when we’re back in for the third workout but he’s doing it because he knows that’s what’s required to maintain and to reach a certain level of elite performance.”
The barbecue meet and greet is on Saturday June 28th from 4:30 to 6:00 with the live auction of Luka’s jerseys starting at 6:00. The skills camp is on June 29th and is for grades 2 through 12. For more information and to register for the camp you can go to lukagarzaacademy.com
