A trio of local wrestlers advanced to state championship matches inside the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on Friday night.
Pierce Rohman of Martin County will wrestle for the Class AA title at 133 pounds. The Red Bulls junior took a 7-1 decision over Nolan Fettig of Alexandria to advance. He advanced there with a technical fall over Samuel Moore of Zumbrota-Mazeppa. Jackson Refsnider of Totino-Grace awaits in the title match.
Isaac Rodriguez of Jackson County Central will wrestle for the Class A title at 139 pounds. He escaped with a 5-4 decision victory over Adam DeVlaeminck of Minneota in the semifinals. He earned a major decision over Jackson Peasley of Pelican Rapids in the quarterfinals. Gage Bjerga of Staples-Motley awaits in the title match.
Dallas Gossen of JCC will wrestle for the Class A title at 152 pounds. The Huskies junior survived with a win by 11-10 decision over Gavyn Hlucny of Crookston. He took the 9-5 decision over Henry Dohnalik of La Crescent-Hokah in the quarterfinals. Masyn Patrick of Holdingford awaits in the title match.
A separate trio of locals lost after battling in the semifinals but third place is still a possibility entering Saturday.
Kyler Thier of JCC lost by 7-1 decision to top-ranked unbeaten Trey Gunderson of KMS in Class A at 145 pounds. He advanced there with a 1-0 decision over Waylon Thieke from LeSueur-Henderson. The Huskies sophomore awaits the winner of the match between Carter Adickes from Mille Lacs and Hunter Polikowsky from Chatfield.
Torrey Paplow lost to Kaleb Mead of Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran by 10-8 decision in the Class AA semifinals at 152 pounds. He advanced there with a 9-7 decision over Noah Cameron of Little Falls. The Red Bulls senior awaits the winner of a match between Tate Olson of Delano and Trevor Holmberg of Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus.
Mathias Liepold of JCC lost to Wyatt Pilarski of Holdingford by pin in the Class A semifinals at 127 pounds. His quarterfinal win came by 7-4 decision over Nathaniel Venske of Central Public. The Huskies eighth-grader gets the winner of a match between Bryan Jacobson from Kenyon-Wanamingo and Nathan Richter from West Central.
Aaron Becker lost by pin in the 215-pound Class AA quarterfinals to Tristan Zingler of Cannon Falls and then lost by pin to Joseph Connor of St. Peter in wrestlebacks and finished 1-2 as a freshman.
DJ Miller stayed alive in the 285-pound wrestlebacks with a 5-0 decision over Matt Raboin of Chisago Lakes before getting pinned by Kemper Ely of St. Peter. The Red Bulls senior finished his career with a 1-2 record at the Class AA Tournament.
Payten Sorbel of JCC lost in 107-pound wrestlebacks to Benjamin Schmid of Mille Lacs. The Huskies freshman finished 0-2 during his debut at the Class A Individual State Tournament. He started his week with a decision win to help JCC advance to a sixth straight team semifinal.
Carson Kolander of JCC lost in wrestlebacks to Trenton Huber of WEM/JWP at 189 pounds. The Huskies senior finished 0-2 at the Class A Individual State Tournament. His week included going 2-1 in team matches to help JCC take third place.
Kate Kolbe lost by 6-3 decision to Cora Flinsch of Roseville in the 142-pound girls wrestlebacks and finished 0-2 at the State Tournament. The Red Bulls junior will be looking to return next year.
