Josh Bolluyt Stepping Down As Spirit Lake Football Coach

Spirit Lake Community School District proudly celebrates the years of dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to developing young athletes into champions, both on and off the field, as Josh Bolluyt announces he is stepping down from his position as the head football coach. For nearly two decades, Coach Bolluyt has been the heart of Spirit Lake football. He has guided the program to unprecedented success, inspiring student-athletes, and instilling a culture of integrity, discipline, and teamwork. His “Built for Others” philosophy reached far beyond the field or just his athletes, as it has shaped the lives of countless students, staff and families across the entire Spirit Lake community.

“Eighteen seasons. Countless players, memories, and moments that shaped who I am. This school, this community, and this program have been such a huge part of my life. I’m so proud of the men and young people who’ve built something special here and am blessed beyond words to serve this school, community, and program,” commented Josh Bolluyt.

Coach Bolluyt returned to Spirit Lake in 2005, taking over the football program in 2008. At the time, the program had struggled with a decade-long record of 15-75. Determined to change the culture, Coach Bolluyt brought with him a very defined philosophy: build relationships first, work hard, and always prioritize teamwork and character. He used the principles of service leadership, work ethic and team unity to transform the Indians football program into a powerhouse. Since taking the helm, Coach Bolluyt has led the Indians to one of the most successful eras in school history, amassing an impressive 138-56 record, 9 district championships, 14 playoff appearances, two state titles (2012 & 2015), and two state runners-up (2011 & 2024). Throughout the last 18 years, Hafer Field has absolutely been the place to be on Friday nights in the fall.

“It’s hard to put into words what Coach Bolluyt means to this athletic department, this school and the entire community,” says Athletic Director, Rachel Fisher. “It has been every parent’s dream to have Coach Bolluyt lead their son on the football field. He is a generational coach and truly a football mastermind, but he hasn’t done any of it for the trophies or awards. He has Encourage Relationships Display Integrity Embrace Growth done it to build relationships with the student athletes and mold them into the best young men they could be. He has been a role model to me and every other coach in our district. We are so grateful that he was and is a Spirit Lake Indian.”

In the words of Superintendent, Dr. David Smith, “Josh Bolluyt is literally the greatest man I know. In my opinion, there is no single individual who has made a greater impact on our school and community than Josh. He is, without question, the greatest coach in Spirit Lake history. His peers will tell you that he is one of the best to ever walk the sidelines. Our football program, our district, and our entire community are better because of him. His leadership, integrity, heart, and friendship have shaped countless lives, mine included.”

Coach Bolluyt attributes the program’s success to the remarkable athletes, coaches, and community that have stood beside him. His coaching staff, many of whom have been with the program since its turnaround in 2008, reflect the loyalty and shared purpose that define Spirit Lake football. “To my fellow coaches, the best teammates and friends I could ask for, thank you for walking beside me every step of the way.”

Coach Bolluyt is extremely humble and not a man of accolades. However, his leadership has very deservedly earned him recognition across the state for building a program grounded in excellence, integrity and a motto that is more than just spoken. He and his program are truly “Built for Others”.

Coach Bolluyt’s honors, include:
● Iowa 2A Coach of the Year – 2012, 2024
● Regional Coach of the Year – 5 times
● Northwestern Alumni Coach of the Year – 2 times

It is with great confidence that Coach Bolluyt turns the program over to a former player and an eight-year member of his staff, Rick Maris. “The program is in great hands with Coach Rick Maris, a man of integrity, character, and one who genuinely cares for his players. I can’t wait to watch him lead this team to new heights.”

“After 18 unforgettable years as head coach, it’s time for me to step away and cheer from the sidelines. As I do this, I’m reminded that the wins and trophies fade, but the relationships never do. The greatest blessing of this journey has been the people who gave so much of themselves and enriched my life in ways words can’t fully express. To Dana, Lucas, and Leah, my heart, my strength, and my biggest supporters, thank you for sharing this journey with me. I’ll forever be grateful to Dr. Smith for his leadership and friendship, and to everyone who’s made these 18 years so meaningful. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your story and for being such a meaningful part of mine.”
