The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball team blew open a soggy 5-3 game with 14 runs in the second and third innings en route to a 17-5 win over Unity Christian in Hartley on Wednesday night. Unity Christian got out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first half inning, forcing the Hawks to switch from starting pitcher Krista Orthmann to Kathryn Ahlers. Ahlers would strike out five and walk just one in the remainder of the game. Chantelle DeHaan took the loss for Unity Christian. She struck out three. Offensively, Ahlers, Katie Mills, Jaylin Rieck, and Kayla Ackerman all had two hits for the Hawks. Stephanie Westra had a hit and two RBI for the Knights who fall to 0-2. HMS improves to 1-1 and hosts Clay Central-Everly on Thursday night.
The HMS baseball team was also victorious last night over Unity Christian by the score of 11-8 and they improve to 2-0 on the season. Next up for the Hawks baseball team will be Thursday at Sibley Ocheyedan
