HMS FOOTBALL GETS PAST OKOBOJI

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn used turnovers to their advantage Friday evening as
the Hawks got past Okoboji 28-16 in non-district football. The Pioneers were
moving the ball to start the game, but a fumble would lead to HMS scoring first.
Jordan Japenga capped off an eight play drive with a two yard touchdown run. HMS
missed the extra point to make it 6-0 with 6:58 to go first quarter. Neither
team would score again until 10:17 in the second quarter. Okoboji’s Alex Heller
scored from a yard out, capping off a six play drive to give the Pioneers the
7-6 lead after the extra point. The Hawks fumbled on their next possession and
the Pioneers then failed to convert on a fourth down in Hawk territory. After
getting ball back, it would take just three plays for HMS as Blake Simons scored
on a 70 yard touchdown catch with 4:31 to go before half. The Hawks converted
a two point conversion to go up 14-7. Okoboji would keep the ball the remainder
of the half and Jake Dodge kicked a 37 yard field goal as time expired to make
it a 14-10 halftime score.
 
In the second half, both teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter. The
Hawks scored first with 4:21 to go on a two yard touchdown run by Devon Ten
Kley. After the extra point, HMS led 21-10. Okoboji responded with a six yard
touchdown catch by Dodge. The Pioneers failed to convert a two point conversion
and trailed 21-16. The Hawks added an insurance touchdown to start the fourth
quarter. They burned nearly five minutes of clock during a 12 play drive that
resulted in a 24 yard touchdown catch by Simons. A couple of interceptions would
seal the win for HMS later in the quarter.
 
Simons had nine catches for 134 yards for the Hawks. He forced and
recovered a fumble and had two sacks. Japenga threw for 176 yards. He had two
touchdowns through the air to go along with a rushing touchdown. Ten Kley had 19
carries for 90 yards. Connor Kuchel had a sack and Brian Perez caught an
interception as HMS improves to 3-4 (2-2). They travel to Sibley-Ocheydan with a
trip to the playoffs on the line next week.
 
Okoboji was led on the ground by Noah Bouse. He had 80 yards on 15 carries.
He also had four catches for 32 yards. Heller threw for 164 yards. He ran and
threw for a touchdown. Dodge had five catches for 55 yards with a touchdown
catch. Houston Hawkins had four catches for 49 yards. The Pioneers are 1-6
(0-4). They host Cherokee next week.
