Former Players Returning to Alma Maters

Iowa head basketball coach Fran McCaffery has hired former Hawkeye Kirk Speraw as an assistant coach. Speraw had been the head coach at Central Florida for 17 years and played for Iowa when it won the Big Ten title in 1979 under Lute Olson.

Iowa State’s all-time leading scorer in basketball is returning to the program. Head coach Greg McDermott has hired Jeff Grayer as an assistant. Grayer was an Olympian, a former first round pick in the 1988 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, and has his number 44 retired at ISU. His hiring has yet to be approved by the school’s administration, however, he says he looks forward to helping bring Cyclone basketball back to national prominence.
