Spirit Lake Results From Spirit Lake Boys Coach Brad Travis
On the Final day of the Drake Relays our kids still remained focused and brought their best to the track. Our Shuttle Hurdle (Carter Toews, Jake Cornwall, Drew Alger, and Ethan Stecker) made a statement by qualifying 1st into the finals with a New School Record of 59.35. It was then onto our Girls (Emma Hennrickson, Mackenzie Kauffman, Addison Avery, and Maggie Bruinsma) to take the stage in the 4×100. These four girls had 4 very good exchanges and ran a good time of 51.71. They would finish 53rd. I was very impressed how they remained focused for 3 days waiting for their turn to take the track. They are competitors and I expect them to do great things in the coming weeks as we move into the end of our season with the Lakes Conference and district meets approaching. Soon after the girls, our boys (Carter Toews, Jake Cornwall, Drew Alger, and Ethan Stecker) took their turn at the 4×100. These 4 boys ran their season best with a time of 43.55 and missed finals. They would finish 14th. Roughly an hour later found those same four boys lined up for the finals of the Shuttle Hurdle. They ran a fearsome race and no doubt had all of the other 4A teams worrying, but as such is things sometimes in track, we were DQ’d due to a hurdle violation. Even with a blown-up hurdle they ran an even faster race than prelims. Sometimes you just have to lay it all out on the line and that is exactly how they competed, and we couldn’t be happier with them going for it all. I’m looking forward to opening up that record case this next week and letting them change the time and some of the names around from last year’s school record. A special Hat off to Coach “Doc” Bolluyt who has put Spirit Lake Hurdles and Sprints on the map over the last decade and this year’s performances at Drake were no exception. Maybe this year we can finally get you the assistant coach of the year credit you deserve. You have my vote for sure.
One other highlight worthy of noting for today was Spirit Lake Alumni Qai Hussey, who while running the 4×400 for Mankato State officially split a 46.72 today. This marks his first time running in the 46s. Being his 4th 400m in 3 days of competition it will be exciting to follow him the remainder of the year and see how low he goes.
