Spirit Lake played their home football opener last night, taking on a 1-0 Storm Lake team. The Indians scored on their first possession, but the Tornadoes stayed close nearly thru the first half, with Spirit Lake struggling with turnovers and missed opportunities. A couple of rushing touchdowns just 39 seconds apart late in the first half gave Spirit Lake a 21-0 lead going into the break. The second half belonged to the Indians, who finished unofficially with 362 yards of total offense on their way to a 42-0 victory. Josh Hofstra led the way on the ground, rushing for 75 yards on 8 carries and two touchdowns. Kenten Murray also found the endzone twice, picking up 38 yards on 7 carries. In all, the Indians rushed for 268 yards, and threw for 94. Coach Josh Bolluyt commented after the game that the pace of the Spirit Lake offense wore down the Storm Lake defense. Next up for Spirit Lake is Forest City, who lost to Clear Lake Friday night 34-7. You can hear that game on KUOO with pregame at 6:45pm and kickoff at 7pm.
