Mary McClurg, 76, of Spirit Lake passed away at her home on Monday, October 20, 2025.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 24, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Burial will be held in the St. Margarets Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Mary Ann McClurg, daughter of Duard and Evelyn (Kuhn) McClurg was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa on September 1, 1949. She attended Spirit Lake School from K through 12, graduating in 1967. After high school, she attended a business college in Sioux Falls, SD and returned to Spirit Lake in 1969 and worked at the Spirit Lake School.
In 1975, she moved to California. She was first employed at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood, CA and then worked at Saint Joseph Medical Center from 1979 until 1995, when she returned to Spirit Lake. She began working at Dickinson County Hospital (Lakes Regional Healthcare) in 1996. She retired in 2015.
Mary enjoyed gathering with her classmates for monthly breakfasts, gardening, and baking. She was an avid reader, especially books about the Iowa Great Lakes history. A loyal Spirit Lake Indians football fan, she also cheered for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Mary was a devoted member and volunteer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake, where she found great joy in serving others. She always looked forward to when her great nephews, Adam Wurr (Sarah) and family of Saint Louis, MO and Mitch Sangl (Taryn) of Bozeman MT would come to visit her.
She is survived by her sister Karen Sangl (Lonney) of Wahpeton; a niece, Julie Wurr (Bill) of Laurens IA; nephew Keith Sangl of Spirit Lake nephew Dan McClurg of Spirit Lake; niece Susan Lynn (Todd) of Spirit Lake and a niece Sandra McClurg of Estherville. Plus many great nephews and great nieces plus great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Edward Carlyle McClurg and his wife Karen (Mortiz) McClurg, her niece Melissa Sebastian and great-nephew Spencer Wurr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St Mary’s Church.
