Work On Drainage Issue At Speier Park In Okoboji To Get Underway In June

May 10, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– Work will be getting underway next month to correct a drainage issue in a heavily used park in Okoboji. City Administrator Michael Meyers says the work will be taking place at Speier Park…

“If you go to the west side of the playground back behind the trees right now, there’s a pretty massive canyon type thing that’s been caused by drainage over the years. Right now water is going on the south side of the park crossing to the west and then cutting back on the west side of the park creating this big canyon. It’s not something we want back there, especially with children around and adults going through the park, so it’s something we’re correcting with some underground drainage tile. We expect that work to start in June. Part of that work is going to include some tree removal back there so if people see that, that’s what’s going on. We’ve met with the contractor and talked to them about how this is a public park and to make sure that their site is secure and clean and all of those things that we want back there.”

Meyers says the park will remain open during the project…

“The contractor will access the site on the east side of the park and kind of work their way around, and the park will be wide open for use. All of the facilities will remain as usual.”

Meyers says the work is expected to take a couple of weeks or so to complete.
