Woman Sentenced On Forgery Charge

September 20, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Storm Lake)– A Laurens woman will serve up to five years in prison for committing forgery. 38-year-old Tammy Steiner pleaded guilty in early July to the crime of Forgery, a class D felony. Steiner was sentenced to a prison term not to exceed five years with the Iowa Department of Corrections.

Steiner was accused of writing a check that did not belong to her on October 4th of 2023. A criminal complaint says Steiner forged the owner’s signature, and gave the check to her husband to make purchases at a Storm Lake auto parts store. An investigation determined the checking account had been closed in 2016, and the checks were taken in a burglary of storage buildings and vehicles in Pocahontas County sometime in the nine months prior to the forged check incident. At the time, Steiner denied knowing she signed the check, and claimed she didn’t know how the check ended up in her wallet.
