(Spirit Lake)– Dangerous and even potentially deadly winter weather is headed our way.
A winter storm warning goes into effect for most of the region, including the Iowa Great Lakes, at 6:00 this (Thurs.) evening until 10:00 am Friday. At that point, a blizzard warning will be in effect until 6:00 am Saturday. The National Weather Service says 4 to 10 inches of snow is expected along with wind gusting to 35 mph Friday afternoon and Friday night. Forecasters say that will result in extremely poor visibility in blowing and drifting snow, making travel very difficult if not impossible.
In addition, a wind chill warning will be in effect from 6:00 pm Friday all the way until noon on Tuesday. Wind chills as low as -45 degrees will be possible. Officials say that could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes and could be life threatening for anyone stranded without the proper gear.
