Winter Games Kite Festival Bringing In Flyers From Around The Globe

January 26, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– This year’s Kite Festival for Winter Games is again drawing in flyers from around the world. Among them is Nicholas who is from an area near Paris, France…

“It’s a wonderful experience for us to be here with this cold and with the frozen lake. It’s a change because normally we are on the beach with warm wind and sun, so it’s perfect. Just 10 days ago we were in India.”

Rolf, who’s from Germany, not only flies the giant kites, but also makes them…

“It’s like your baby, you know. It’s growing up and you bring it to fly and you look for several details. I brought a big range of my kites here which you can see on the weekend, like the dragon, sea horses, lobsters, and also the fishes. We try to put up as much as possible.”

Craig came to the Iowa Great Lakes this weekend all the way from New Zealand where kite flying is a popular pass time, especially now as it’s summer there…

“A lot of sports kites goes on in New Zealand. The big inflatable show kites, not so much. We do a lot of traveling. We have to go away from New Zealand to find festivals like this. Currently it’s our flying season so I left everybody back home where it’s summer.”

Blake Pelton, who’s from Utah, along with Steve Boote of Sioux Falls, originally launched the kite festival back in 2019…

“Yeah, it went from kind of a side show of the Winter Games to sort of being the main attraction and main event. It’s just exploded, yeah.”

Look for the kites again this weekend off of the Arnolds Park Amusement Park on Smith’s Bay. You can find more information by clicking here.
