Wild Prairie Winds to present Iowa Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival

June 03, 2024 Becky Thoreson

(Okoboji)-There’s a new Chamber Music Festival on tap this week. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Wild Prairie Winds will perform several concerts this week as part of the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival.

Executive Director Katey Halbert says, the group saw a need after spending a couple of summers as Artist in Residence at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. “We’ve been an Artist in Residence at Lakeside Lab for two years before this year and, because of the time that we spent in the Lake Okoboji area, we’ve really just grown to love the community and have started to see that there’s a lot of venues and places for classical music that we, in our time there, haven’t being performed. So, we kind of feel like we’re filling a void by creating this summer chamber music series.”

She adds that the group hopes to expand the festival in the future. “We really do hope to actually evolve to include other artists. We have a long-term goal to create a music camp for high school students as part of this, as well. So, that’s something that doesn’t currently exist in the State of Iowa, a chamber music camp specifically for high school students and so, that’s kind of like our long-term goal for this entire project is to have that educational aspect to it, as well.”

Wild Prairie Winds will perform at Pearson Lakes Art Center at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, at Lakeside Lab at 7 pm Tuesday and at Little Swan Lake at 7 o’clock Wednesday night.

There will be a ticketed concert at Pearson Lakes Art Center on Friday evening.
