Whether RAGBRAI Will Be Going Through Spirit Lake Apparently Is Still Uncertain

February 26, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Whether or not Spirit Lake will be a pass through city for RAGBRAI is apparently still uncertain. A group advocating for the route to go through the city addressed city council members at the conclusion of their meeting Tuesday evening…

“This is a tourism area. We spent I don’t how many millions of dollars on the courthouse, beautiful, many years back, and did Hill Avenue. We remodeled the west side of Big Spirit Lake. We have 10,000 to 20,000 people coming to the area. It’s our chance to showcase Spirit Lake.”

City councilman Keith Brockmeyer also is Chairman of the Dickinson County Extension Board and serves on the board of directors of the Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce…

“And to a person, nobody in any of those groups is in favor of having it come through and disrupting the fair or, you know, there’s just not a route that’s feasible. We’re not doing that on purpose.”

Mayor Kevin Bice suggested stakeholders and representatives of those groups that have events going on that same Monday as RAGBRAI meet with the city’s Public Safety Committee to see if there’s any possible route that could be feasible. City officials again said Tuesday evening major street projects in both Spirit Lake and Orleans also still need to be considered.

A couple of council members said they were under the impression of some emails received late Thursday from RAGBRAI officials that Spirit Lake likely was no longer in the running for being a pass-through. Proponents say communications they’ve had with RAGBRAI officials since then indicate they’re still open to discussions.

RAGBRAI won’t officially announce pass-through towns until early April.
