March 24, 2026

(Windom, MN)– New details are being released into a head-on crash this past Friday in southwest Minnesota that resulted in multiple fatalities and seriously injured a number of others. The Minnesota state patrol is finding numerous safety violations in the vehicles involved.

Authorities say the driver of the SUV had no driver’s license, and the transit van being used as a party bus had no seat belts. The patrol said the 2019 Ford Transit Van was equipped with seat belts, but none were in the vehicle during the crash.

The SUV’s 67-year-old driver, Martin Nickolas Hanson, had no driver’s license from any state.

Hanson, who was from Springfield, Minnesota, died in the crash, along with four passengers in the van. Multiple others, who were also passengers in the van, were injured, some seriously. All of those in the van were from Jackson and Lakefield.

The SUV and transit van collided head-on on Highway 71 north of Windom. The investigation into the crash continues.
