(Milford)– We’re learning additional details into a fire this (Thursday) morning that destroyed multiple units at a storage facility on the north side of Milford. Milford Fire Chief Jim Carpenter tells KUOO news they were called to A-1 storage in the 1600 block of P Avenue around 7:45 am…
“On our arrival smoke coming out of every door and the main fire was found in the southeast corner of the structure.”
Carpenter says fighting a fire in such a facility poses it’s own unique challenges…
“Oh yeah, there’s one unit that was on the uninvolved side, mostly, that had big propane cylinders in it, an oxy acetylene kit in it the way it looked, at least an oxy bottle. Yeah, you just know what you’re getting into and they’re just full of stuff. Most of these are so packed you can’t hardly get into them.”
Carpenter says they’ve identified where the fire started and what caused it…
“It was started in the southeast corner by a gentleman running a generator powering some battery chargers, charging batteries in the storage unit, the way it looks.”
Crews were still on the scene yet late this (Thursday) morning. A mini-excavator was being used to pull items out of the units to ensure they were extinguished. Firefighters finally left the scene around 1:00 pm.
Carpenter says he’s unsure as to the exact number of units that were affected but he says it’s substantial. He’s also uncertain as to the dollar amount of the loss of the items in the units, but says it, too, is significant.
