We’re Getting A Better Idea On The Amount & Extent Of Structural Damage In Spencer

July 03, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– We’re starting to get a better handle on the scope of damage from the historic flooding flooding in Spencer. Adam Severson, the city’s Planning Director, gave an update on the numbers at Monday’s city council meeting…

“We’ve analyzed approximately 60 residential structures with either foundational cave-ins or collapses. These properties were identified initially by a circle with a red x in a door-to-door canvas by the fire department as a rapid assessment to gauge the initial idea of the devastation. Planning staff then GPS’d the locations and with photography of cave ins and collapses to help gauge the damage and help procure outside resources.”

Severson says from there, a rapid response team of licensed professionals came to Spencer to do some follow-up inspections. He says a color-coded notification system is being used to identify the magnitude of damage on three different levels…

“The first category would be inspected. This green placard states that lawful occupancy is permitted and displays the date, time, and inspector’s comments with the inspector’s I.D. and agency. The second placard, restricted or yellow placard states the structure has been inspected and found to be damaged as described on the placard. The date and time along with the inspector’s credentials are displayed as well. The third placard, unsafe, or red, which states do not enter or occupy. The description of the inspection’s finding will also be described on this placard as well as well as date, time, and inspector’s credentials.”

Severson adds efforts have been made to expedite electrical inspections.
