Weekend Fire Causes Extensive Damage To Spencer Business

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A Spencer business was heavily damaged in a weekend fire.

Spencer firefighters were called to General Traffic Control on the south edge of Spencer shortly after 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Upon arriving, Fire Chief Doug Duncan says firefighters encountered flames on the south side of the building with heavy smoke coming from the roof.

The blaze quickly spread from a ceiling in the office area to the northwest side of the building, where part of the roof collapsed. That part of the building was declared a total loss. A dollar estimate of damage to the office area and a warehouse on the south side of the structure wasn’t immediately available.

An investigation into the cause continues, but Duncan says it’s believed the blaze started in a furnace room.

The blaze resulted in Highway 71 in that area being closed to traffic as firefighters had to access hydrants on the east side of the road, which had to be dug out.

Firefighters from Royal were also called to scene.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were on the scene about two hours.
