Walking Tours To Highlight History Of Downtown Spencer

October 17, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– You’ll be able to learn more about the history of downtown Spencer in a special event this Saturday, October 22nd. Shelby Nelson, Executive Director of the Clay County Heritage Center, says they’ll be holding some walking tours of downtown Spencer…

“This all started with a grant from the Walden Charitable Foundation. We were able to hire a summer intern over this last summer, so it’s a Spencer High Schooler named Kaylie Nightingale. She did a bunch of research over the summer and now she’s turned those into tours and now she’ll actually be able to lead these tours.”

Nelson says there will be multiple tours covering different topics…

“We have one about the 1931 fire at 10:30 and 1:30, and then kind of a broader history of the buildings at 11:30 and 2:30.”

Nelson says the tours are free of charge, but those planning to attend need to sign up ahead of time…

“You can RSVP by calling the Heritage Center. Our phone number is 712-262-3304 and we’ll get your name on the right time slot and subject, and then we will tell you where the tour will start. So that’s the only way you can find out where it all begins.”

Question and answer sessions will also be held following each tour.
