Wahpeton Tables Action On Emergency Watershed Protection Program

October 15, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Wahpeton)– A representative of the NRCS went before the Wahpeton City Council Monday evening with a program that would assist property owners who sustained lakeshore bank collapses during the June flood. The city would need to serve as a sponsor and overseer of the Emergency Watershed Protection Program, funded 75 percent by the NRCS and 25 percent by the city. A damage survey report would first be performed to determine eligibility.

Several council members expressed concern saying the cost to the city, at least as of right now, would be wide open. Council member Holly Meade said she was concerned over the amount of work it would require of the city’s staff of three and-a-half people, as the city would be responsible for hiring engineers and contractors and would need to oversee the work…

“I spent a lot of time reading through this and I kept thinking to myself who would do all these site visits? Who would do all of this operation and maintenance? Who would apply for all of these things?”

The council tabled the matter, saying they want to meet first with impacted property owners, some of whom have already started repairs.
