(Wahpeton)– A member of the Wahpeton City Council says it’s time for local governments to lobby state legislators to protect what’s left of local control. Council member Holly Mead made the comment at Monday evening’s meeting after the council voted to revise its ordinance to meet requirements of a new law passed in the last session of the Iowa Legislature that prohibits local governments from banning the shooting of fireworks on July 3rd and 4th and December 31st…
“Because I had burns in the floor of my pontoon from bottle rockets which is why we had that ordinance in the first place is because they don’t look at hoist covers, jet ski covers, boat covers, boats, and it was a war zone in the village over the 4th of July. That’s all. I suggest we lobby, we write some letters saying come on, let’s have some local control back here.”
Several cities in the region previously had ordinances on the books that prohibited fireworks from being shot off altogether. The new state law has forced them to revise those ordinances.
