(Spirit Lake)– Voters in the Spirit Lake Community School District head to the polls this coming Tuesday, February 2nd, to vote on a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy.
The 65 cent per-thousand-dollar in valuation levy would be in effect three years if approved.
Opposed to past PPEL votes that were asking up to a dollar per thousand dollars valuation for seven years for multiple projects, Superintendent Dr. David Smith says this one is focused 100 percent on technology and learning.
Smith says if approved, proceeds from the PPEL would allow the district to provide one laptop computer for every student in grades 5-12 with 24/7 access. Mobile carts with about 25 computers in each would be available for K-4 students.
Smith says it would also allow the district to install a wireless network at its campuses along with additional projectors, raising bandwidth, increasing video and internet access, along with enhancing math, science and special education technology.
Smith says it’s critical the Spirit Lake School District stay ahead of the curve when it comes to preparing students for jobs in the future that will be based on higher levels of technology.
With the state roll back figured in, Smith says the owner of a home valued at $200,000 would see their tax bills increase by roughly $58 a year for the three years the levy would be in place.
