Voters In Spencer To Decide On Proposed Changes To Library Board

July 18, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Voters in the city of Spencer will find an additional item on the ballot when they head to the polls in November.

The city council Monday evening approved a measure to be brought before voters on whether or not to decrease the number of members on the Spencer Library Board from nine to seven and to reduce terms of board members. Chairman Bob Whittenburg…

“We unanimously agreed that the reduction in the number of people on the board would enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the board’s governance of the library, and that the reduction in the terms of service from six years to three would be a better ask for members.”

He said they’ll be able to reduce the size of the board without having to force anyone off…

“Well we’ve had some resignations and we just have waited for this moment to fill and so we decided to ask for this and now we’re just operating with some absent people, so there won’t be anybody needing to resign.”

The proposals will be on the ballot for the November 7th regular city election in Spencer.
