(Okoboji)-Organizers are seeking volunteers for a couple of Earth Week events. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
Volunteers are wanted to participate in two events presented by Green Iowa AmeriCorps, Whiterock Conservancy and Iowa Lakeside Laboratory.
Land and Water Steward Natalie Schwarz explains. “Lakeside Lab is a site for Green Iowa AmeriCorps Members, and so we have a partnership with Green Iowa AmeriCorps, The Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids and here at Lakeside. So, we’re going to be doing a Northwest Iowa Prairie Prep week. The first event will be this Saturday, the 23rd, at Whiterock Conservancy. Then, the following Saturday, which will be April 30th, we’re going to have our event at Lakeside Lab. At Whiterock we’ll be pulling invasive species, we’ll be hanging out with goats and talking about conservation and we’ll be doing some water quality samples. At Lakeside, we’ll do a bird tour, and then we’re going to be pulling some garlic mustard. We’re going to be planting tree and shrubs, and we’re going to be using waders and canoes to clean up Little Millers Bay.”
She notes that anyone wishing to participate should RSVP online. “You can go to the facebook page of either Lakeside or Whiterock, and there will be a google sheet form to fill out. It’s essentially your RSVP to say I’m coming. If you want to sign up for specific events, you can do that. You don’t have to do this, but it does help us get a head count as to how many people we’ll be having so that way we have enough shovels and pitch forks and whatever we’ll need.”
