Volunteers Needed To Help Spruce Up Wildlife Sanctuary

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Conservation Board is putting out a call for volunteers to help out this Thursday (Oct. 25th) in the clean-up of the Tom Grein Audubon Sanctuary on the east side of the 2400 block of Denver Avenue in Spirit Lake. Rich Leopold of the Conservation Board tells KUOO news the bird sanctuary was founded in 1972 and has suffered in recent years from a lack of maintenance…(click here for comment from Leopold.)

Anyone who can help out is asked to meet at the site anytime between Noon and 6:00 p.m. Thursday…(click here for comment from Leopold.)

Leopold says the sanctuary, which many may not even be aware of, has been a valuable tool for Spirit Lake school kids…(click here for comment from Leopold.)

A 6th grade science class at Spirit Lake Middle School last year studied the sanctuary’s eco system, took pictures, drew maps and did research. Last spring members of the class presented their findings and recommendations to the Northern Prairie Lakes Audubon Society, which gave the class $1,000 to implement most of the recommendations.
