(Spencer)– Spencer Hospital Community Health Services and Clay County Public Health are partnering with Johnson School in Spencer for the “I-Walk” program, an off-branch of the Safe Routes To School Project.
I-Walk is funded through a grant awarded to the Iowa Department of Public Health by the Iowa Department of Transportation and is aimed at identifying possible hazards and opportunities for children walking or biking to and from school safely.
The I-Walk project helps communities understand better how and why students travel the routes they use to get to school.
As part of the project, a walkability assessment will be conducted beginning at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 27th. It will take place within about a half-mile radius of Johnson School. Volunteers are needed to help out. Recommendations will be reported back to the community in the fall. The information generated will be used by the community and school to make the trip to and from school safer for students.
Volunteers wishing to help out on the 27th should contact Alison Simpson at (712) 580-7787. A complimentary lunch will be served and each volunteer will receive a special prize. Training on GPS devices will be provided.
