Utility Companies Urge Customers Behind On Bills To Pay Up Now Or Risk Disconnection

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Pay up or make arrangements to do so now, or you’ll be in the dark. That’s the message from Alliant Energy and other utility companies, which are vowing to shut off service to those in arrears on their bills now that a moratorium on disconnections is about to end.

As of March 31st, Alliant Energy officials say about 24,872 residential customers in Iowa were 60 days or more behind on their bills, up slightly from last year at 23,004. Officials say those customers owe more than $6.8 million, up nearly $1.4 million from last year. The average bill for residential customers who are behind is $275…up from last year’s $236.

Tim Heinrich, Director of Customer Support Services for Alliant, says customers who make no attempt to pay up or try to set up a payment plan will be subject to having their power shut off. The shut-off moratorium ends today (Fri.), meaning anyone who hasn’t done that could be left in the dark.

Heinrich says Alliant also offers a number of payment options to its customers. More information is available by calling 1-800-ALLIANT.
