(Spirit Lake)– Area utility companies are asking customers to dig out around their electric and natural gas meters.
Officials say it’s important the meters be accessible so they can be easily shut off in the event of some sort of emergency.
They say it’s also important the meter readers have access to them. Otherwise, they say estimated readings may be used, which could result in higher than expected bills.
Likewise, area Fire Chiefs are requesting anyone with fire hydrants on their property to dig out around them as well. In some cases hydrants are completely buried.
Fire officials say the time it takes for them to dig out a hydrant could mean the difference between saving and losing a structure.
