Unseasonably Cold, Wet Weather Causing Some Issues For Newly Emerged Corn

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The unseasonably cool, wet weather the past couple of days has some newly emerged corn looking a bit sickly. And Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says they’ve even been seeing some signs of frost damage in some places…
“Some of that corn is struggling a little bit and even some of the soybeans. So there was a little bit of re-planting and while we were out viewing those fields, Steve, we did see a little frost damage from last weekend, particularly on the corn, but fortunately the growing point is below the ground so that’s going to grow out of that.”
Nesseth says fortunately most area producers were able to get most of their planting done before the latest rains hit…
“I think we’re 99 percent complete with the corn and we’re probably about 90 percent with the soybeans and so there’s a few acres of that that has to go in. We’ve got a number of producers that do some winter rye. They use that for livestock feed and so they’re harvesting that rye right now and they’re either going to plant, well it’s early enough right now some are actually going to come back with some corn to plant and then some are just going to follow up with soybeans. But it’s kind of working out pretty good this spring so I think everyone has to be pretty thankful that we’ve made the progress that we have.”
Nesseth adds most producers are now in the process of doing some post emergence applications.
