Unofficial Results In From Tuesday’s Special Election In Spencer

April 08, 2026

(Spencer)– James Vermeer was the apparent winner of a special election Tuesday to fill a vacancy on the Ward 4 seat on the Spencer City Council. Unofficial results show Vermeer defeating Duane Bates by only nine votes. Vermeer received 187 while Bates had 178.

Bates had been previously appointed by the council to fill the vacancy, but a petition was filed challenging the appointment, resulting in Tuesday’s special election.

The vacancy was created when Donavon Wunschel, who held the seat previously, became Mayor January 1st.

Another special election to fill the vacant Ward 5 seat on the Spencer City Council will be held April 28th.
