U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley Comments On SL School Board Decision To Arm Up To 10 Personnel

August 25, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– A member of northwest Iowa’s Congressional delegation today (Wed.) commented on action taken earlier this week by the Spirit Lake School Board to arm some of the district’s employees. U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley told news partner KTIV he supports the action, saying such decisions are best made on the local level…

“We want to leave more education things except for special education, we’re going to leave most things to either the state legislature or the local school district. So I think whatever that school district decided was best for them to keep their kids safe, I would accept their judgement more than I would my judgement on what to do on that particular case.”

Grassley made his comments during a stop in Spencer, one of several he made in the region.

As we reported earlier this week, the Spirit Lake School Board voted unanimously to arm up to 10 personnel, none of them teachers. Those staff members will be designated by Superintendent Dr. David Smith and will undergo extensive training through a professional. A timeline as to when that will be accomplished wasn’t immediately known.

School officials say it will compliment a number of other security measures already in place.
