Two SL School Board Members Face Renewed Calls To Resign

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– There were more calls Monday evening for the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Spirit Lake school board to resign.

Valentine Waltz was one of two people in the crowd that again called for the resignations.

Waltz asked the board “How do you have a policy as a school board requiring students to follow all of the policies and the rules and accept the consequences while you don’t?”

Waltz continued “What kind of leadership and excellence does that say to the students–where’s your character?”

Another patron who spoke at Monday night’s meeting also called for the resignations, saying he believes the public has lost faith in the current board, adding it’s important trust be restored prior to a new Superintendent taking the helm.

Waltz was one of several petitioners that took current school board members Beth Will, Ann Goerss, Scott Wicks and Todd Hummel to court, along with former member Cliff Garvey, over four alleged violations of the Iowa Open Meetings Law. A judge found the defendants guilty on two violations, and each member was ordered to pay a 400-dollar fine. They are currently contesting the judge’s findings.

As a result of the ongoing litigation, Lonnie Saunders, the school district’s attorney, told the crowd he was advising the board members not to make any comments on the matter.
