(Undated)– The number of vehicle fatalities in Iowa has been on a disturbing trend for the past several years. But now there’s some good news to report. Iowa State Patrol Trooper Spokesman Kevin Krull says it’s still early in the year and things could change, but for now, the news is encouraging…
“Last year at this time statewide we had 95 deaths already, which we’re only at 74 which is still quite a few as we say but that’s 7.5 percent better than over the five year average which is six lives.”
He says he’s not completely sure why the numbers are down, but he offers a suggestion…
“I’d like to think that the education portion of it is a huge part of this, but it’s kind of that two-headed monster is education and enforcement.”
Krull adds it also boils down to smart decisions by drivers…
“We talk about it, we know it’s right but then the fact that I don’t want a ticket for it, or I understand the consequences of this, I don’t want to get in a crash and cause that. It’s the, ultimately it’s the citizens or the drivers that are out there are the ones that make the ultimate decision and play the ultimate role in this.”
Krull also emphasizes the importance of wearing seatbelts.
